Beach Boys

The Baby Boomers know them. The Generation Xers and Yers known them. Heck, your young kids may even know them. They're the Beach Boys, a band from the 1960s that transcends generations. Their southern California style and song lyrics about surfing, teenage love, and, of course, cars, appealed to most people across the United States. The Beach Boys was a family affair with Brian Wilson bringing together his brothers, Dennis and Carl, and their cousin, Mike Love. Al Jardine, the boys' friends, also was an original member. Often called "America's Band," the boys had many successes throughout their career but they also received some criticism. No one can debate that they deserved their spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, having influenced bands over the decades. The group had the most Top 40 hits of any other rock band in America, not to mention 56 Hot 100 hits, making them, according to Billboard, the all-time top selling American band. Some of the original members are belting out smash hits like "Little Deuce Coupe," "Surfin' USA," "Help Me Rhonda," and "Kiss Me, Baby."

Throughout the 1960s, The Beach Boys were one of the top pop rock bands out there, producing dozens of top ten songs and an astonishing 36 top 40 hits.  When they debuted out of California in 1961, the band was made up out of brothers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine.  The music that they made was mostly up tempo and fun and included themes like love and dating.  They are also well-known for making a lot of hit songs about cars, like 409, that showed their love for American metal.

The band is the highest selling American band of all time, selling more records than any other band.  Although they had great successes, the band is not the same now as it once was.  Lead singer Brian Wilson and mental illness and drug use problems that the band tried to overcome for years before he eventually left the band.  His two brothers died in the 1980s.  The two remaining members, Al Jardine and Mike Love each perform on their own with their own bands.  Both are known for playing Beach Boys hits in their shows, as does Brian Wilson.  So, although the band does not exist like it did in the past, the music of the Beach Boys lives on.

Indeed, generations to come will know and love the Beach Boys, not just because their music is still played on the radio.  The band also was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in 1988.  This means that people will be able to learn about and appreciate all the contributions this group had to pop music and how they have changed the music world for the better.

If you want to see the former Beach Boys that still tour, you should look them up here on ConcertKing. The Beach Boys Band, Endless Summer Band, and The Wondermints each features one former Beach Boy.
