New Orleans Jazz Fest

 There is no other place in the entirety of the United States that is more synonymous with jazz than the City of New Orleans, Louisiana.  New Orleans was built on the back of jazz music and the genre owes everything it has to the city.  In celebration of the city's love affair with jazz music, the city has held a special event nearly every year since 1970.  The event is officially called the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest, but you will also hear it called the New Orleans Jazz Festival, or Jazz Fest.

 The event takes place over two weekends on the Fair Grounds Race Course, which is a horse track, allowing for a lot of real estate to fill the needs of all the people who attend this great event.  The event takes place from about 11:00 in the morning to 7:00 at night every day of the event and is scheduled to occur during the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May. 

There are typically several music acts performing at one time on different stages throughout the grounds.  It is important that you check the schedule carefully and choose which performances that you want to see so that you won't miss anything.  In addition to jazz, you will also find more afro-centric, world music, and blues. 

Supplementing all the great music, like most music festivals, there are also vendors selling foods and crafts, many with a New Orleans theme.  For instance, you can find yourself eating a crawfish po' boy sandwich, while also being able to purchase Creole artwork.  There are also activities for kids, making it truly a family affair.  The kids can make crafts and check out special kids' performances. You can also watch live cooking demonstrations and may learn how to make some Cajun dishes yourself.
