The Allman Brothers Band

For more than 40 years, The Allman Brothers Band has been dazzling audiences with its great music.  The band was started by brothers Duane Allman and Gregg Allman, which is how the band got its name, in 1969.  The band's first taste of success came just a couple of years later with their hit album At Fillmore East, which was a live album.  It included hit songs like Whipping Post, which  is still considered to be a great song by many.  The album was a mix of blues, jazz, and country, although they labeled themselves as Southern rock for most of their careers.

At that first taste of success, however, the band also had their first taste of tragedy when Duane Allman died in a motorcycle crash.  Another member of the band, the bass player, would die the exact same way the following year.

Despite these tragic circumstances, the band played on and were even more popular after the release of Brothers and Sisters.  Off that album came Ramblin' Man, which may be the most recognized of all of the band's songs.  Despite this success, the band had a lot of inner friction and would go through personnel changes, break-ups and make-ups over the years, which is pretty typical of any band.

The band did not really find tremendous success again until 2000, when the latest iteration of the band did quite well during their tours.  They began playing New York City each spring, which has become a popular tradition.  These concerts, which are held for a month straight, give lots of native New Yorkers and many fortunate tourists the chance to hear some of the great hits in the band's arsenal.  Although they originally held those concerts at the Beacon Theater, recently it was changed to the United Palace Theatre, which is located in the far uptown part of the city.
